As for Strange Darling, it is a bit more in the thriller genre (very gory though) but its structural complexity is reminiscent of one of the best horror movies of the last decade – Barbarian by Zach Cregger. In our recent interview with Mollner, the filmmaker also mentioned Steven Spielberg’s pre-Jaws film, Duel, is very apparent in its influence on Strange Darling. It does feel though, even with historical references, this is a truly novel form of film.
Christopher Robin Bell, the editor has had an experience with Mollner and was able to surpass here as he included everything that he acquired while working in the editorial department for Joe Carnahan action flicks. Everything from the jarring editing to the gorgeous framing by Ribisi, to the beautiful and stunning work from colorists Scotty Cross and George Koran keeps you on the edge. Their compositions flow well honor the purpose of this culinary adventure which was meant to be episodically jerky aided by Craig DeLeon’s overbearing music causing unnecessary excitations in the most pleasing way possible even while The Woman is still crossing the last internal part of her escape routes.
However, it is not only Humtom Savant’s storyline that is captivating but also the noteworthy characterizations of rather familiar actors in short yet deliciously splendid parts of Ed Begley jr. (from Better Call saul) and Barbara Hershey (from Black Swan) as a flower child couple – till death does them apart literally – inspired by The Woman who runs away from her terrifying gun wielding husband. As always, the ever funny Begley A Mighty Wind – Arrested Development – Pineapple Express – is very funny in this film. And without giving away too much of the plot, there is another performer from Breaking Bad universe who appears rather sensational in Strange Darling as well.
Here’s the thing: Be it the little doses of black humor or the hurried return to the exciting, bloody mayhem that is so promising in this film’s ads, Strange Darling never fails to amuse from start to finish. It has an ageless, casual, classic touch; enigmatic and typical characters with good dialogues and lots of unexpected turns of events, yet the most remarkable aspect will be the exciting pictorial imagery that will be experienced. Let’s really hope that the director and the actor sustain their collaboration in other films too. For now, and we will repeat it again, there is no need to be keen ont the genre of horror in order to enjoy this one.
